Here's some of my design process for the Korra costume....mandarin collar cotton lycra top....so happy to have found that perfect shade of dusty blue - and NOT shiny! it was difficult to get the center notch just right and angle the piping but I finally got it. and it's the perfect shape for showcasing toned arms!
for the poplin pant and front skirt........I made the pant pretty voluminous so that it would pouf over the boots nicely. The overskirt was an ultrasuede-ish cotton - both in different shades of slate blue...just took a lot of looking in the mirror and back at the drawing to make sure I got the angles and proportions right.
my favorite part - the fur wrap (faux of course - Bryan and I are vegans after all) ......brown ultrasuede lined with a heavy fleece for structure....white fur trim, weathered sash...
I matted the faux fur a bit with hairspray to make it look a little more worn. Original fur is on the right....
forearm bands were cotton spandex....
bicep band was the same cotton lycra I used for the top...Mike and Bryan liked the idea of some of her items having a handmade touch, like Korra could have made them herself, so I used an applique technique with a big zigzag stitch.....
lastly were the boots -we were all on the same page about wanting to steer clear of Uggs - Bryan pointed me to these house slipper type boots - I loved the exterior stitching - I ordered them online and dyed them with dark brown Rit dye using a paintbrush...
then I made the tops of the boots seperately...the same ultrasuede as the fur wrap and a faux shearling trim....
they just slipped over the shoe, scrunched down nicely, and stayed in place on their own.....
