mechanical man...........

last night Phil had a bunch of friends over for a video game party after work - it was perfect since I needed all night to sew in my studio....took a big load of Blossom Boxes and Nuno dishes to Hemingway and Pickett this morning...

I went with more neons, florals, and a bit of an 80's vibe for this group...

since it was such a beautiful cloudy sunny/grey day, Phil came with me and we had brunch at a place called Dusty's next door...then a quick stop into Danish Modern LA....

Phil liked that they scatter comic books on all the tables......

then my parents came over for a work day...we trimmed the palm trees and other brush, moved a lot of stones, dug up old plants, my Mom killed a lizard, made an awesome miso soup (not using the lizard)
then we all hung out by the fire pit and almost got attacked by a bat.......a fun full day!

the gloved one..................

I love my parents tree this year...they went super retro with an aluminum and tinsel tree from the 40's! It's the sparkliest thing ever!

the finished album for my Grandma...I made a little bag for it too...

and the coolest gloves my reps gave to me.....olive green Christopher Fischer cashmere.........

with these nifty little cutouts for touchscreen capabilities....very handy when walking around NY in February trying to find a restaurant......

Off to clean the house and get it ready for Christmas!!

Had a nice quick dinner with Joaquim and Sharon last night at a new place for all of us - The Federal Bar in Noho...vegan burgers!

Today - I'm happy to say that Hemingway and Pickett  in Echo Park is now carrying some of my items.......

custom costume part two....

mandarin collar cotton lycra top....it was difficult to get the notch just right and angle the piping but I finally got it....

 
 
poplin pant and front skirt........I made the pant pretty voluminous so that it would pouf over the boots nicely. The overskirt was an ultrasuede-ish cotton....

 

fur wrap......ultrasuede lined with a heavy fleece for structure....faux fur trim, weathered sash...

 
I matted the faux fur a bit with hairspray to make it look a little more worn. Original fur is on the right....

 

forearm bands were cotton spandex....

 
bicep band was the  same cotton lycra I used for the top...Mike and Bryan liked the idea of some of her items having a handmade touch, like Korra could have made it herself, so I used an applique technique with a big zigzag stitch.....

 
lastly were the boots - I ordered a house slipper type shoe online and dyed it with Rit dye...

 
then I made the tops of the boots seperately...the same ultrasuede as the fur wrap and a faux shearling trim....

 
they just slipped over the shoe, scrunched down nicely,  and stayed in place on their own.....

 

a custom costume............

The three weeks leading up to Comicon were super busy  - I met with Mike and Bryan (the creators of The Legend of Korra) about their specifications for the costume, showed them swatches and colors etc, they cast the model, I took all her measurements, then set off to work in my studio for a week straight on the outfit.  Joaquim had given me the full turnaround of the character, so I had every angle I needed. The preliminary fitting went well with a few adjustments and some boot options. Final fitting was to finalize the boot then it was off to the con........

 
 

 

I got her ready Saturday morning at the Hard Rock....ended up doing her hair and makeup too....I made a wired ribbon for her pony tail using extra pant fabric.....
 

at the Convention Center with the creators Mike and Bryan....

 
 

a couple fans recognized her right away and asked for a pic.............

 

the we headed inside to the Nick booth where Joaquim, Mike, Bryan, and Ryu signed posters for three hours to a major crowd of fans. Korra worked the booth all day just posing for pics with the fans in line...

 
I touched her up twice during the day, then it was off to the panel for The Legend of Korra....they officially introduced her to the crowd.....

 

all in all it was fun experience....only about three other girls dressed up as Korra, but I thought this guys puppet was the best version....

We're in the midst of a big rainstorm here in LA....perfect Chai Latte weather..

Joaquim and Sharon gave us this Tassimo for my birthday the other night and we have been having so much fun playing with it!

 

I love working in my studio when it's raining out......making a bunch of these little chirimen flowers right now....

 

wednesday.....................

tonight Phil and I went to the opening of the Downtown Women's Center - a beautifully restored historic building on 4th and San Pedro. They contacted me a couple of months ago to purchase this piece for their permanent display...........

 

we haven't been downtown together since we moved away a year ago - and the event was right around the corner from our old apartment. we realized we don't quite miss it yet - but it was fun to visit.
